Southern Academic Resources — This map gives an overview of the preeminent research universities and community college technical centers available to students throughout the American South.
- Research Universities (green dots) — The research universities identified on this map come from the 2009 annual report on The Top American Research Universities by the Center for Measuring University Performance. The list includes both public and private colleges and universities. The Center for Measuring University Performance provides a ranking for each universities according to the following performance measures: total research expenditures, federal research expenditures, endowment assets, annual giving, National Academy membership, faculty awards, doctorates granted, postdoctoral appointees, SAT scores and National Merit and Achievement Scholars.
- Community College Technical Centers (yellow dots) — The community college technical centers identified on this map are all members of the National Science Foundation’s Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program. The ATE program support partnerships between industry, community colleges and other education sectors working to train knowledge workers in high-tech fields of vital importance to the nation’s security.
